Schnauzer Logic: Observations from the downslide
Schnauzer Logic, Episode 39
Date: December 20, 2006
Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 39
Summary: If you’re going to stand out in performance, you’ve gotta find a place where you can develop your true and honest voice. The Schnauzer Logic podcast is shaping up as an uncensored platform for my manic comic artist’s persona, where host Robin Diane Goldstein and her studio panel respond generously to almost every one of my halting, half-formed observations from the downslide.
After a couple of visits, we’ve settled into a comfortable pattern where Robin sets up the premise, I stutter through a joke, the crew (gifted raconteur Sean Meehan, comic plumber Parviz Fathali and quietly present Sheri Stevens) bust out in laughter. When I’m on Schnauzer Logic, I can pretend I’m a big success.
“Feel free to workshop your material on our little show anytime!” Robin writes after my appearance on the program’s 2006 finale, which also wraps up its first year online. Busted!
It’s like radio, only bettah
Schnauzer Logic offers two or more hours of pop culture and comedy roughly three times a month, in a traditional talk format otherwise freed from terrestrial radio’s regressive language and content restrictions.
In rapid-fire fashion, Robin introduces herself as a “straight, white, buddhist, vegetarian, lesbian fraternity boy trapped in the body of a recovering transsexual woman patent attorney with a bizarre sense of humor, and a masters degree in city planning, and a few of my stand-up comedian friends.”
Transgender issues recur, but only in the course of a free-flowing program. The cast is sharp, fast and funny. Show up primed for a performance and you find yourself challenged, in context. In other words, you’re expected to carry on an actual conversation.
And now that Schnauzer Logic has eaten all of my original material, conversation is about all I have left. I’ll have to try that next time.
