Portrait captures pain behind comic genius

Without pain, we would have no art for audiences to examine, internalize, claim as inspiration or blithely reject.
And I suppose if one factor separates my comedy music from the artistically disposable Demento crowd at one extreme and the scatologically unconstrained Howard Stern scene at the other, it would be my painfully ironic view of love and romance.
That’s the way I would paint my self-portrait, anyway. Besides, it’s easier to paint a heart than an outsized ego. But don’t take my word for it. Continue reading

The Gamma Knife of love
It’s Valentine’s Day, and following tradition, Schnauzer Logic’s Robin Diane Goldstein marks the occasion by previewing her upcoming brain surgery, two days hence.
(Editor’s note: “The radiation never came anywhere near a vital organ,” Robin reports following the event. “The (operation) took about six hours, including the scaffolding and drywall, x-rays and Homeland Security check and the actual Gamma Knife procedure.”)
Fortunately, the only vital organ of concern for me this bitter holiday season was a broken heart. Accordingly, I shared a particularly offensive story about my neurotic ex-girlfriend with the giddy panel of regulars, including Sheri Stevens, Sean Meehan and Parviz Fathali. Continue reading

AC Podcast: Stink has a Second Life
Chris Hambly hosts the AC Sound Engineering Podcast from the UK, and I highly recommend this program for all home recording enthusiasts who prefer their tutorials delivered in a decisively British brogue.
Still, even when you can’t understand what anyone is saying, you can tell they’re having a really good time!
Throughout the show, Chris and his chatty guests provide examples of various techniques to improve the music they record in living rooms, bedrooms, basements and occasionally, an actual studio. Continue reading

Tyrone Kahn keeps the Demented faith
Weird Al Yankovic isn’t the only nerdy white guy who owes his funny music career to Dr. Demento. A whole generation of geeky musicians, with names such as Worm Quartet, The Great Luke Ski and Dino-Mike, get played not just by Dr. Demento, but also by hard-working Internet radio hosts Tyrone Kahn and David Tanny.

Someday I’ll ask Dr. Demento whether he’s heartened or bedeviled by the corps of eccentric Internet radio hosts he’s inspired to carry forth the flickering flame of funny music.
Uber-geeky by nature, they’re nevertheless devoted to Dementia and the like-minded artists who have found a welcoming audience on the Web and in the nerd network of sci-fi and comic book conventions. Continue reading

Milk, cookies and Morris
First chance I get, I’m heading over to Baby Boomin’ Mama Laurie’s and her daughter Joanna’s house for milk and cookies.
They’re so sweet, I’m certain the pair started the Random Fandom podcast just to share another fun family activity, delivered “almost live from Corpus Christi, Texas, on the Nueces Bay.”
Random Fandom featured The Ballad Of Morris The Cat on a rare all-music podcast, although I can’t help wondering if my song might have better fit the previous week’s topic: The Cat’s Meow.
