Jeri Massi’s listeners are exhausted refugees from the religious wars, beaten down, she says, by the hectoring authority of fundamentalist Christianity.

Neither did Jesus make them rich, nor save them, nor heal their wretched diseases.

They’re emotionally whipped and sorely disappointed.

Good thing they’ve got my songs to cheer them up!

Now, Jeri, who played The Ballad Of Morris The Cat on a previous edition of her Recovering Fundamentalists podcast, suspected I’ll Get Old And Die might appeal to her flock as well.

But damaged nerve endings remain delicate, and Jeri requested a few changes, purely for medical reasons.

From your mouth to God’s ear

“I laughed all the way through I’ll Get Old and Die,” she wrote, but added, “Will you let me edit out the stanza about the clap, Jesus, and Republicans? I’ll credit your site, so listeners can…get offended independently.”

After consideration, I really must agree. My song is much better without all that comedy to distract people!

A grateful Jeri later wrote:

In fact, I just recently found Jeri’s podcast from September, featuring my denuded song.

And I’m left to wonder. Did my surviving lyrics help heal the hearts of a few former Falwell-ites? Did I harvest any hopeful new votes for Hillary Clinton?

We can only pray that I did. Our work continues.
