Top of the pops, Ma!

Dalecast podcastJust because AM Top 40 radio is dead doesn’t mean the format has to go away.

You don’t have to miss the repetitive formatting, the crappy fidelity, the deejays talking over the music, the cheesy jingles.

Just for you, Steve Wheatley has preserved the radio relic with his fast-paced daily Dalecast, “from Frosterley in the heart of Weardale, County Durham, U.K.”

A former “mobile DJ” comfortably retired to his small sheep- and cattle-farming village in Northeast England, Steve started the show in July 2007 and, best as I can tell, hasn’t missed a day. His 48kbps podcast flawlessly recaptures the low-fi AM radio experience.

Jerry does Weardale

On this recent episode, amid the rockers and ballads and Powerplays, he found room for Fly Me To The Moon.

“Not quite sure what to make of that one, actually,” Steve segued out of my song. “He sounded very much like that Jerry Lewis.”

The man’s seen a few microphones in his time, I think. Unlike some other podcasters, he gets the joke.

But you’re not the only one who knows how the radio business works, Steve. Now, whose palm do I have to grease to get me one of them Powerplays?

He sounded very much like that Jerry Lewis!  (0:46).
