“Somebody asked how many times I’ve played his tunes on Dalecast now. I’ve actually lost count!” Steve mused in his charming Weardale brogue during one recent show.
The answer, Steve, is 113 times. You’ve played my songs 113 times through Episode 525 of Dalecast on March 13. You’ve played (Jerry Lewis) Fly Me To The Moon 34 times. That’s way too many plays of (Jerry Lewis) Fly Me To The Moon.
What’s to like?
So, why does Steve play my songs so frequently? Because he likes them?
“As always, many thanks for your blog on your website,” Steve writes (in his charming Weardale brogue). “Since you started mentioning me on yer blog, I’ve had about 170 referrals from you to the Dalecast site.”
Ah hah! So that’s why Steve plays my songs. For the referrals! You gotta know that nobody does nothin’ for free in this world.
Anyway, like many successful podcasters, Steve dreams of legitimate radio exposure that will validate his existence as an entertainer and musical kingmaker.
Streaming radio: Dead, dead, dead
![]()
And so Steve’s founded a streaming radio enterprise called realRADIO1, where he produces special episodes of Dalecast and gets to boss around a bunch of other deejays.
Now here’s the tragic reality of streaming radio. The RIAA killed streaming radio. For now, at least.
Consider the sad facts. Total downloads for Dalecast, since July 10, 2007: 45,953. (Source: Dalecast.) Impressive!
Total listeners for one recent Dalecast episode on realRADIO1? Embarrassingly small. I won’t embarrass Steve with the number. (Source: Steve Wheatley.)
Ben Twisted gets the treatment
But on podcast and radio stream alike, Steve continues to promote new artists, such as up-and-coming loser Ben Twisted, of Eat More People and Vasectomy fame.
“You’re doomed to failure. Keep up the good work!” I MySpace-commented Ben in a show of support.
He’s just that good. So good, in fact, that very soon he’ll be begging Steve Wheatley to stop playing his songs!
I’ve actually lost count! (4:54).

I’ll stop playing yer tracks if yer think I is overdoing it mind lol
Steve:
Are you kidding? I love Dalecast. This is just my way of saying, Thanks for all your support!
Steve fires back
Steve Wheatley responds to my post, point by point:
I keep waiting for a break in the action here. Maybe Steve Wheatley will stop playing my songs, the same pitiful few, over and over again, so I can summarize the latest batch of episodes with a entry.
You will get more plays unless ya remove them from the PMN, you will be on the 3 in a row spot next week , with some of your “non-comedy” songs. All exposure is good exposure! My listeners will get that fed up with ya that they will buy your material and you will hit the big time and no longer need the PMN and you will withdraw your material and hence no more plays on Dalecast! lol

I winnit play it anymore then…. Remember … “Fly me to the moon” was the very first track I played of yours!! Am still waitin’ fer more!!!

YUP!!!
“As always, many thanks for your blog on your website,” Steve writes (in his charming Weardale brogue). “Since you started mentioning me on yer blog, I’ve had about 170 referrals from you to the Dalecast site.”
Thanks for your Blog viewers for checking out Dalecast but I’m afraid you are bottom of the stats list TOP referrer is a Chinese site with 2205 referrals lol
Ah hah! So that’s why Steve plays my songs. For the referrals! You gotta know that nobody does nothin’ for free in this world.
I play your “Material” because I like it. I love the old Jerry Lewis Movies and your music/lyrics reflects life as it is without the gloss and crap that we have to put up with in today’s sad life!
Anyway, like many successful podcasters, Steve dreams of legitimate radio exposure that will validate his existence as an entertainer and musical kingmaker.
I Had “Legitimate” radio exposure on Capitol Radio here in the UK when I was younger as well as Community radio, Club work, Mobile Discos & Promotional work, all from the age of 14. I have no wishes to go back to that and anyway I can’t because of my health problems. I do Dalecast and realRADIO1 to stop me crawling up the wall in boredom because I can’t work anymore.
When I was doing mobile disco’s and club work as well as radio I was always “Told” what to play or play summat to make the punter dance. Now I prefer to play music from independent artists that say FUCK to the RIAA and the various leeches around the world.
Sure if yer face dinnae fit or ya don’t sleep with the right man/woman then yer will never “make it” in the music world. There is TOO MUCH manufactured music these days to appeal to the narrow minded sheep out there. At the end of the day tho’ ya gotta live and if music creation is your only means of support then do what ya have to do to feed ya sel!!
I have “Entertained” thousands of people over years of my DJing and made lotsa peeps happy! Music is in my blood and will only leave me when I die! I know sod all about music, I just like what I hear!!
I don’t know anything about music. In my line you don’t have to.

Streaming radio: Dead, dead, dead
And so Steve’s founded a streaming radio enterprise called , where he produces special episodes of Dalecast and gets to boss around a bunch of other deejays.

realRADIO1 is just another little hobby of mine to help me stop crawling up the walls outta boredom. FUCK the RIAA, I am in the UK and don’t recognize them at all, the greedy money grabbing bastards they are. However because I play mainstream “music” on realRADIO1 I need to have a licence to do it and over here in the UK it is from PPL.
I have this licence (and the bugger cost over 200 bloody quid, that’s POUNDS to you Ken!!lol) also the hosting with Galaxy Webhosting costs 12 quid a month as well!
realRADIO1 is a SHOUTCAST, not Internet radio!! Lots Shoutcasts out there and most of them DON’T pay the licence fee! realRADIO1 came about after the Dalecast show was wanted by another streaming radio station called “Stream Radio Live” but they were total wankers!! So I thought … Why not do yer own Steve? So I fookin did!
Sure the listeners I’m getting are low, but then my life/existence does not depend on it, it’s a hobby! If I help some bands get exposure then spot on! Personally I don’t gain from anything I do on Dalecast or realRADIO1 (apart from a few banner adverts on me sites, which believe me don’t even buy me a bottle of voddie!!)
Listeners too small for realRADIO1 considering there are bloody thousands of streams out there on t’ internet, I’m trying to be different by including independent artists that don’t cow tow to the major record companies. When I do an Episode of DALECAST it only gets about 20-30 downloads upon release and after that it get more downloads over a period of time. The Episode of DALECAST that has had the most downloads to date is JUST2 which was a Comedy special, featuring YOU Ken and has had 370 downloads to date. Still not a lot but it’s getting there!
I “don’t” boss around other “DJ’s” they do do their own thing, Like Gary Hunter who creates great original and cover versions of electronic music from the 80’s etc. I am actively encouraging other artists to do a show for realRADIO1 to feature their own music and promote it! Fancy a go Ken?

How can yer say summat like that? “Doomed to failure” means no-one plays his material? I can see the comedic value of this comment but surely ya shud be promoting Ben?
Toodle Pip!! Hinnies!!
Twitter:
What?? Up-and-coming loser?? I’ll have you know I have been a loser for YEARS! I don’t have to strive for this position – I own it!
You tell ‘im Ben!! lol
For the love of God, Ben, when are you going to stop Digging my blog?
