Whooo! Kahn Man drops Season 5 Finale

Seems like its only been a century since Tyrone Kahn took up podcasting, but he’s actually concluded two seasons of the Kahn Man’s Comedy Corner.

As the Season 5 (including three seasons streaming on the network) Finale drops on , the excitable Kahn Man is already planning new business for his return in September.

For one thing, the Season 6 opener will introduce Tyrone’s latest single. Can’t tell you the title, but think Beatles parody, following his 2008 mega-hit .

Also listen for an exclusive interview with voice artist , known for his appearances on the animated series.

10,000 downloads

Tyrone played several of my songs this season, including on the Season 5 Finale.

His show’s a hit! Following its debut in September 2007, the KMCC podcast has recorded more than 10,000 downloads (covering its first 39 episodes). Not bad for a comedy music show host who counted his weekly streaming radio listeners on both hands and feet, with his eyes and ears thrown in.

Don’t ask me why Tyrone counts that way. He just does. Now that he has a podcast, Tyrone can hardly count all his listeners. I have to help him!

It sounds to me as if David Tanny’s trying a bit too hard to convince everyone that he’s having fun.

“We’re just havin’ fun, folks!” Dave pleads during yet another of his ephemeral new podcasts, the . “That’s all it is, is just fun, folks. It’s just fun, it’s all it is.”

Unfortunately, fun as a concept seems beyond Dave’s reach. In fact, he feels abandoned by his two true loves, the and Top 40 radio. He’s searching for meaning in his life.

He’s not Demented — he’s crazy!

Announcement: David Tanny no longer Demented, Dave proclaimed in another of those where he refers to himself in the third person.

“ as a word dropped from his radio show titles and who knows what,” Dave wrote. “Time to move on with my life.”

So, the podcast departs, replaced with the and programs, to emphasize “comedy, humor, weird and novelty” as once exemplified by Dave’s broadcast hero, Dr. Demento.

Dementia vs. Comedy

Dave says he’s going Funderground. “Dementia and Comedy don’t seem to get along,” he writes provocatively at .

Yet, his commitment to the Dementia ban lasts all of two minutes into his latest show. “Each week, we count down the Top 30 Demented songs of the week, as voted by you!” Dave says, introducing the Fun 30 show. Oops!

Have you considered ballroom dancing, Dave?

The truth is, a confident and successful DT wouldn’t be half so fascinating as the one who riffs aimlessly on the word , finally concluding, sagely, “Anything that has music on it is a record — whether it is a record or not.”

David Tanny, the comedy music impresario, is a restless genius.

He’ll take one show, cut it up into three different shows, create an Internet radio station here, a podcast there…all to ensure his listeners remain in a constant state of confusion.

The sprawling, cluttered landscape known as exists as a home for Dave’s nostalgic world view, where AM Top 40 survives in perpetual drive time, and Halloween song parodies and fake farts provide the soundtrack for Southern California’s endless summer.

Let the blithering begin

Which brings us to D.T. Rants: Ken Turetzky’s Syndroming, a segment from Episode 39 of .

Here, Dave stumbles through my of his review of Tyrone Kahn’s show. The feedback loop of incestuous references must leave listeners thoroughly perplexed.

But I’m always fascinated by Dave’s lack of any editorial point of view, and even more so by his hilarious attempts to spell my name, clear his throat or pronounce the word blithely.

Ultimately, however, I believe the wandering monologues are the point of D.T.’s rants. And if by editing them down to their blithering essence I make him appear slightly foolish — well, it’s just my way of saying Thank you for playing my songs.

Rearranging the deck chairs

ISGD-PE continues, but stripped of its Demented Datebook and Rants, which comprise the new (He’ll say anything!). Dave has also added , featuring podsafe non-Dementia.

Curiously, D.T. now deletes ISGD-PE shows after two weeks, re-editing them for streaming radio.

“Sorry,” Dave writes. “This is to encourage listeners to spend less time downloading the shows and more time doing something else such as visiting the Web sites named within the podcasts.”

Dave’s the one podcaster who has no interest in preserving his content for devoted listeners or the archaeologists who many centuries from now will surely want to analyze his throat-clearing for clues about the downfall of civilization.

The man clearly has something to say. And when I figure out what that is, I’ll let you know.

David Tanny plays my songs on his and various streaming radio programs and that’s all great, but lots of other shows play my songs.

What I like instead about David’s shows are the vast, seemingly interminable segments (aka D.T. Rants) where he explains the rules for his complicated ballot, or even better, when Dave introduces a concert review and then spends 10 minutes blithely describing his highway routes to and from the venue.

So, how was your trip?

Just imagine your Dad, if somebody showed him how to record a podcast:

I finally found Bellflower Drive and I drove up the 405…Went to the 405 and it merged to the 5 and got to the 805; I took 52 to 125 and then back home again. Anyway, that was my trip to the Kahnmanapalooza and back. It’s time now for Police on the Scene!

Now, Dave may once have understood his own Top 10 voting system, but that was many long highway drives ago.

Here he outlines the rules, sounding about as confident as Sarah Palin describing :

We’re going to recap the Top 25 songs of 2008…according to the Dementiamania…charts before…prior to August and then …starting on August. So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna combine all the point totals for all the songs that have been on the chart as of the current and as of the past. When founder Captain Wayne abandoned early, at podcasting and fled to streaming radio (gotta have that Weird Al!), he took a bunch of Demented music hosts with him, including David Tanny.

DT’s continues to stream on MMA, and on his revived channel, DFSXRadio.com. He’s added some old and new programming as well, although listener counts in the low dozens (on Live365) would make the project seem hardly worth the expense. But then, Dave’s always seemed like the kind of guy who enjoys talking to himself.

Dave also maintains a massive maze of a site at that claims more than 3.5 million visitors since its inception in September 1995. He sometimes generously mentions me in his (note to DT: Ever heard of ?), which motivated visitors may find buried amongst old comedy show playlists, trivia and assorted refuse.

His site reminds me of my basement — stashed full of stuff I don’t need but can’t bring myself to throw away.

Still, if DT hasn’t discovered , the light’s at least begun to dawn regarding the benefits of modern podcasting.

Podcasting is far more convenient for host and audience alike. Collect some (royalty free) music, record your show and post an mp3 for listeners to download. It’s just that simple.

Dave hasn’t provided download numbers for his , but judging from the numbers shown by Tyrone Kahn’s , I can guess he’s been far better served by his podcast audience than his streaming radio listeners.

Tyrone’s program originated on DFSX Radio, where, Tyrone told me, it would draw some 20 or so listeners per show. In contrast, the Kahn Man’s podcast has averaged 228 downloads per episode since its debut in September 2007.

Gone to pieces

Meanwhile, over on the Mad Music Archive, Captain Wayne just introduced a downloadable, podsafe version of his .

But as far as I know, the new show is available only on the MMA and and isn’t listed with the leading podcast directories.

Further, it’s broken into two pieces, complicating the download process. You’re missing the point, guys!

Fortunately for me, though, DT plays my music just about everywhere he’s got a show, including ISGD-PE, which recently featured , Why Don’t You Get A Job – Live at Mayfest and .

The Mad Music Archive has seen a shakeup of late, with ill-advised podcasts removed in favor of ASCAP- and BMI-friendly streaming audio, and comedy music host David Tanny to his bitterly abandoned network.

Seems these guys can’t shake their Weird Al addiction. And now that they’ve acknowledged copyright law, which requires permissions and hefty royalties for the right to offer protected content in download form, the short-lived podcasters can only retreat to the stunted medium of Internet radio.

Can’t say they weren’t warned.

The lone surviving, law-abiding podcaster on the MMA is Tyrone Kahn, whose has featured (with the occasional early misstep) podsafe or otherwise approved content from the start. Tyrone’s show also remains available in format on the MMA.

Wayne Ross learns the cost of love

“We’ve been researching the legal side of podcasting and the advice you gave [Tyrone, for whom I serve as a podcast advisor] was spot-on,” writes MMA proprietor Wayne Ross. “We’ve had to switch to streaming-only on my shows since the listeners want the old fav’s (Weird Al, Allan Sherman, Monty Python, etc.). With all the royalties we have to pay we may have to make some major changes in the coming year. We’ll see.”

I proudly acknowledge my contribution to the cause, and in the same spirit of magnanimity, accept the recent Dementiamania Song of the Week honor (shared with by Art Paul Schlosser and Spookster and the Scaremenots) awarded my own by listeners of David’s .

DT, who’s probably sick of both songs, didn’t play either one on the show, instead substituting by Weird Al Yankovic, in honor of Dave’s own birthday.

DT rebuilds his empire

Dave’s announced a slate of shows for his revived DFSX Radio, including MMCZ, an all-new, one-hour (and podsafe) and an upcoming Dave’s Top 10.

Meanwhile, Wayne’s laid out an of his streaming radio expenses in the MMA forums. The site remains a labor of love and a service to the Demented music community spawned by Dr. Demento, who still struggles along with his own . I’m sure both would appreciate your .

Hey, guess what? I have a new song out!

It’s so new, in fact, that I didn’t even know I had a new song until David Tanny played it on his show!

What happened was, I fixed a few problems with , hoisting my MP3 up on the rack and fiddling a bit with the volume and EQ.

This is all dull recording engineer stuff, but your ears are going to thank me.

Dave sends a message

Anyway, I sent the song to DT, with a nice note telling him how much I loved his podcast, etc., and next thing I know, he’s posted the track on his Dementiamania as !

Now, is Dave just creating excuses to resurrect my old songs, or is he subtly suggesting I record some new ones already?

Whatever the reason, I’ve decided to play along. I’m encouraging everybody to visit the Dementiamania and vote for my new song!

What’s Dave eating?

I’d like to change the subject now and talk about the various distractions Dave allows himself while he’s supposed to be recording his show.

During football season, for instance, he’s always got a ballgame on TV in the background. That’s bad enough, but this week, I swear I can hear him eating before he introduces my song. He’s smacking his lips, for God’s sake!

David Tanny is the former proprietor of the , a program he abandoned at the end of 2007 after voters drove him meshugeneh by demanding the same songs week after endless week.

My own , for example, rode the charts for the final 10 weeks of the year. Enough already!

But Dave returned anew in January with the , a weekly, two-hour show that offers a wider range of content and more closely resembles his old show, a comedy staple on streaming radio network .

I bestow my seal of approval

I gave DT a few months to work out the bugs before shipping him a copy of , which Dave kindly promoed one week and then played on the following edition of the MMCZ as part of his New Strokes segment.

For those who demand the opportunity to stuff the ballot box in support of your favorite comedy songs, Dave closes the show with a little something called the .

Always reaching for the elusive puzzle piece to guarantee the smashing success that has long eluded me, I’ve decided the answer is another place to sell my mp3s.

And so, in best self-referential manner, I’m pleased to announce a new addition to the Turetzky Syndrome family of music retail outlets.

For all those comedy fans who never buy my music — and there are so many of you — on , all of my crap is now available at the .

The MMA is the leading repository of Dementia on the Web, playing host to five separate and a comprehensive archive of for the .

Best I can tell, Captain Wayne dispenses with unreliable Internet and picks his own year-end “top songs” list for the .

That worked out just fine for me, as the Cap’n selected and as the Nos. 11 and 10, respectively, new songs for 2007.

Why did he pair my songs on the year-end chart? So they wouldn’t be “lonely.” That’s my kind of methodology.

Not gone but still forgotten

Captain Wayne’s baritone is right for radio. He’s competent and colorless (in the best way), and I most appreciate his attention to artist details. He provides Web sites, spells out names and gets the facts right.

, who served as recording engineer and played drums on I’ll Get Old And Die, will enjoy the reference to his former G-1 (the address of his garage apartment) Studio in Waco, Texas. (Audiophiles will note that Brandon has since upgraded to a two-bedroom in Austin).

But now the pressure’s on. We’re well into a new year, and nobody much cares about the top new songs of 2007. It’s time for people to not care about my top new songs of 2008!
