I’ve scanned the diverse format at KNON 89.3 FM in Dallas, where I’ll be appearing live from 4-6 p.m. CDT Monday, March 9, on with Texas Trevor.

You’ve got your church show, followed by a blues show, then a country show, a rockabilly show and two hours of reggae — with Cambodian news on the weekend. This is , after all. But with all of these options, is there still no place for bad-attitude acoustic comedy?

will never pass as progressive country, so I’ll attempt to fake ‘em out with a few funny, funny jokes and perhaps some Big Black Barn.

I’ve known about Phil since his tenure as host of Phil’s Other Show, mid-days on the Sirius . And best I can tell, Phil knew about me. Every once in a while, I’d get a new friend request on , with a note attached: “Heard Phil talking about you!”

We meet at last

But we never, ever spoke until Phil, now vice president of programming for National Lampoon Radio in West Hollywood, called me earlier this week to chat about comedy music. He needed a couple of days to edit out the profanity (What am I gonna do, not mention ?), and I can hardly wait to hear the result.

Same goes for you, myspace pals. I’ll be counting on you to let me know what Phil said about me this time!

Red Peters plugs Best Of CD
on Sirius Howard Stern Show

Red Peters’ new comedy compilation is out today, and our hero rolled in to on Sirius Radio to promote the big event.

It’s a big day all around for the whole U.S., really, what with 9/11/07 marking the sixth anniversary of the wackiest terrorist attack in history. But that’s not important right now.

What’s important is that Red’s new CD, , from Oglio Records, features my song, !

The album’s available now on , at the last few record stores left in America and numerous online outlets. Go get it.

I’m on the phone with Red Peters when his call waiting beeps. He asks me to hang on for a moment.

“Brenda’s not here,” Red says after a pause. “She’s takin’ a dump.”

“Who’s Brenda?” I ask when Red returns.

“I have no fuckin’ idea,” he says. “Wrong number.”

That’s Red Peters, the smoothly profane songwriter and performer and host of the on Sirius Radio .

Now, just in time for the anniversary of the disaster, that enterprise is set to yield
, from Oglio Records.

The album, available , at record stores (if you can find one) and on iTunes, features 19 tracks from the show, most notably my own .

Red calls his collection “the filthiest and funniest collection of songs ever recorded.” But you knew he’d say that.

“We thought people would need a laugh on that day,” Oglio President Carl Caprioglio told me. Oglio recently released comedy albums by and , and offers a back catalog of music CDs by such artists as .

The rallying cry on uncensored Sirius Satellite Radio is “No more bullshit.”

Meanwhile, the fledgling Stern Show Network declares “No more censorship.” Yet the claim is made not in defiance of FCC censorship or meddling terrestrial radio executives, but in challenge to a rival bulletin board’s perceived suppression of critical debate concerning their mutual hero.

Is free speech really worth all of this trouble?

Dueling fan sites

TSSN founder Mike (aka That Computer Dude) touts the new board as “a site for the fans, by the fans.” He preaches tolerance for divergent points of view while providing capacity for 2,000 simultaneous visitors. (Some 641 people had signed up as of late March 7.)

In contrast, lists more than 122,000 members — as well as a reputation for stifling those who dare to criticize the Stern show.

With both a title and mission statement uncomfortably similar to SFN’s (italics added) “For fans, by fans: We pick up where the show leaves off,” Mike might reconsider just how he’ll differentiate his site from the competition.

However, he writes, “this site is about the Stern Show Network and will include other sites as we grow. SFN is a forum. TSSN is going to be a network of sites. That’s why we took this name.”

Look who’s talking

So, what’s all the fighting about?

The unofficial bulletin boards and discussion groups (see ) that have risen up around the Stern show tend to devolve into reactionary communities focusing their vitriol on Democrats, each other and Howard Stern himself.

For a rationale, consider the ambivalent program host who serves as their inspiration. Stern concurrently favors gay marriage and flattening the entire Middle East with nuclear weapons.

But he’s a fearless comedian, invoking racial and sexual stereotypes to skewer hypocrisy and race hatred, aware that his irony is lost on a certain, massive segment of society. And he manages to work in a few fractured Yiddish phrases as well.

That’s why I listen to Howard Stern. But you might have something to add to the discussion. If so, post a here — or at the Stern show bulletin board of your choice.

Loveable trans-fat freak , a cast member on the for the past five years, has ruefully noted his flirtation with intoxicating substances, among them Jack Daniel’s, cocaine, pancakes and more recently, heroin.

The Horse is a comedy rock god’s pedigree. But fans fear that Lange is emulating his hero and lookalike, , who died in 1982 of a heroin overdose at the age of 33.

Now, purely in the spirit of altruism, a Stern show fan named Russ has created in order to “track all the signs that Artie Lange’s on drugs.”

Through the site, Russ hopes to enlist the efforts of Stern’s army of loyal listeners and obsessive kibbitzers (see ) to preserve the life of this vital entertainer. “With everyone’s combined efforts,” Russ says, “we can make a difference.”

My celebrated ballad highlights a field of 16 profane tunes competing for Song Of The Year on Sirius Radio’s Red Peters Comedy Music Hour.

Red will close the season with a 3 1/2-hour year-end countdown show, at 7 p.m. CDT Saturday, Dec. 30 and Sunday, Dec. 31, on the Sirius Howard Stern/Howard 101 Channel. If you got Sirius, please listen.

But you don’t need satellite radio to help me stuff the box for Her Shit Don’t Stink. The ballot is up now at . (Scroll down until you see Red’s caricature. Her Shit Don’t Stink is the third entry on the ballot.)
