There’s nothing like the real thing
It’s been more than a year since one of my songs last appeared on The Dr. Demento Show, and during that time I’ve been compelled, in the interest of comedy music survival, to grovel before his lesser demented imitators.
That strategy, however humiliating, served its purpose, keeping me afloat until the Doc played I’ll Get Old And Die in the third segment of his Thanksgiving 2007 show.
Cleverly, Dr. D inserted my song as an endpiece for an obscure National Lampoon Radio Hour bit in which a fake Al Jolson delivers a tribute to his dead Vaudeville pal. Continue reading

Let me bomb again

Robin Goldstein took a good 14 weeks to absorb the blow of her 50th birthday, reassessed her place in the universe and, learning nothing, invited me back as a guest on Schnauzer Logic.

For my part, I managed to stop the show cold with my open mic bits, including a redundant Seinfeld impression, vague, unformed complaints about the negative effects of aging on the human body, and plugs for my renovated music blog. Continue reading

Hold the turkey
Predictably, host David Tanny is starting up with the holiday music on the Mad Music Dementia Top 20, beginning the merciless cycle of turkey and Santa songs.

Following the trend, a not so scary Fly Me To The Moon came in at No. 11 in the countdown. Continue reading

Cap’n Wayne cries poop, dooms culture
Somebody’s crossing the line here. Who could have imagined a Demented music show with lyrics presented as the author originally intended, un-masked with “clever” audio snippets of fart noises, dogs barking or Jerry Falwell praising Jesus?
Society won’t end today because Captain Wayne broke new wind with his Bathroom Humor edition of The Mad Music Show, but the culture is certainly doomed. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Continue reading

I give back to the commoonity
Fly Me To The Moon just made its fifth appearance on David Tanny’s Mad Music Dementia Top 20, jumping a spot to No. 7 in listener voting.
I don’t know how long my Jerry Lewis impression can hold out, but DT sounded a bit scratchy throated during his introductions.
Sounds like he needs a break from introducing the same songs week after week. My previous numbah, I’ll Get Old And Die, appeared a good seven times on MMDT20 before it fell off the list. Continue reading
